Crypto ownership surpasses equity with Norwegian adults under 40. Despite slight decline, crypto adoption remains strong in Norway.
On the final day of Nordic Crypto Adoption Week 2026, we turned our attention to Norway - the country that in 2025 saw the highest crypto ownership rates among the Nordic countries.

The final day of Nordic Crypto Adoption Week 2026 turned attention to Norway and the data and insights from the 2026 Norwegian Crypto Adoption Survey.

Some key highlights:

  • 480.000 adults in Norway own crypto - or 11% of the adult population. This is a decrease of approximately 70,000 owners since last year where crypto ownership in Norway wa at 12%.
  • Among adults under 40 in Norway, 65,000 more Norwegians own crypto than stocks, underscoring a continued generational shift toward crypto and digital assets.
  • Local platforms dominate: Nearly 50% of crypto owners in Norway trade on Firi, a rare pattern in the Nordics where international exchanges otherwise dominate.
  • 20% of adults in Norway believe they will own crypto within the next decade.

To discuss these findings, we welcomed some of the leading voices from the Norwegian crypto, blockchain and regulatory ecosystems.

Here are a few highlights:

Thuc Hoang (Firi): Great to see that our branding efforts have been working - in communicating that crypto is safe and easy to invest in. There has never been so much conversation about crypto, stablecoins and tokenisation in mainstream media. So even though the marked has stagnated somewhat, theres also a natural shift after a strong period of growth.

Stig Aleksander Kjos-Mathisen (NBX): Interesting to see that Norwegian prefer local Nordic platforms athan the international ones as we see from the data in Denmark, Sweden and Finland.... NBX is an issuer of a stablecoin and are working actively on payments with stablecoins. We have applied for a specialized banking license in Latvia as we have a presence there. Stablecoins is the carbon of the new digital financial infrastructure.

Marius Johansen (Skatteetaten): Those who hold the most in crypto are actually reporting it. It is mostly those who own lesser amounts of crypto - less than 50.000 NOK - who fail to report. In Norway, crypto is not prefilled in the tax systems, but we try to make it as easy as we can for citizens own crypto.

Torbjørn Bull Jenssen (K33): You can’t find a single politician in our Norwegian parliament who will stand up up and speaks out for crypto. I think that is the next frontier we need to address here in Norway.

Torkel Rokstad (Bare Bitcoin): We have the USD stablecoins. Most euro stablecoins are dead in the waters. We have the ETFs. But how does that actually take us closer to getting anything done? In my opinion, Bitcoin payments is not going to happen. Bitcoin is at a cross roads - if they don’t improve drastically over the next few years, I’m not sure Bitcoin can hold it’s market position.

Morten Søberg (Bitcoin Policy Norway): In 1992, we had a major tax reform in Norway and the Finance Minister is currently laying the foundation for a tax reform next year. So it’s a great time to make headway on crypto related changes e.g. for small Bitcoin transactions or other things to improve adoption.

Erlend Ringstad (Kryptosekken) CARF will mostly make it easier for the tax authorities but not for the individual crypto holders.
